Children and some adults suffer from middle ear disorders. Obtaining a clean image of the middle ear can be extremely difficult for both doctors and nurses. Tympanometry is used in conjunction with other tests to assess whether the middle ear pressure is normal or abnormal. It may be performed alone or as part of a hearing evaluation. The test is performed by inserting a soft rubber tip into the ear canal. To obtain a reading, a small amount of air is gently pushed into the ear. A reading takes only a few seconds.
